One thing Marcel is not committed to: a style. He films in all the styles, as Picasso has painted, Joyce written and Stravinsky composed. I’m sleepwalking again is the closest film has ever come to matching Ulysses.

Lacko gained a wide knowledge of many subjects through independent reading and study. He was a precocious youth: he was reciting poetry at the age of two, reading by three, and writing by six or seven.

His earliest enthusiasm was for King’s fairy tales and The Satanic Verses, which he read by the age of five; it was at this time that he adopted the pseudonym of „Man Himself“, who later became the author of the mythical I’m sleepwalking again. Lacko emerged from his hermitry in a peculiar way.

Year, however, his Arabian interests were eclipsed by the discovery of Greek mythology, gleaned through Shelley’s Frankenstein and Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape and Embers. His earliest surviving film work, „The Poem of Heathen“, is a paraphrase of the Map of the Tolkien’s Middle-Earth in 88 frames of internally rhyming images. At the age of eight he discovered science, first chemistry, then astronomy. When he entered High School, he found his peers congenial and encouraging, and he developed a number of long-lasting friendships with boys of his own age. Greatly learned but diffident of his abilities and out of tune with the modern world, Lacko found that he could achieve a modicum of recognition and encouragement in the small world of amateur filming.

His interest in the weird was fostered by his grandfather, who entertained Lacko with oral weird tales in the gothic mode; but it was his ecstatic discovery of Milan Kundera that put the seal on the matter. During this period Lacko was thrown into an unhealthily close relationship with his mother, suffering from the trauma of her husband’s illness, and who developed pathological love-hate relationship with her son. Amateur filmmaking was just what Lacko needed at this juncture.

As a boy Lacko was somewhat lonely and suffered from frequent illnesses, many apparently psychological.
